ALTERPLAN makes available technical assistance based on the needs and requests of its partners. With its network of consultants, ALTERPLAN is able to access expertise for poor communities after determining with them their requirements and plans of action. ALTERPLAN realizes the multi-disciplinary nature of community development and thus always seeks to expand the perspective of communities to include different aspects of development: from the financial, technical, organizational, to the environmental and socio-economic. This ALTERPLAN tries to do without overwhelming the community and losing sight of their internal capabilities and aspirations.
Workshops and Seminars
ALTERPLAN designs and implements training workshops and seminars. A number of urban poor communities, cooperatives, and other NGO’s have benefited from specialized modules that ALTERPLAN has designed for their specific needs in community planning and cooperative housing. ALTERPLAN has also served as resource in trainings organized by the League of Cities of the Philippines, the Development Academy of the Philippines and the Local Government Academy for local government units.
A special teaching project of ALTERPLAN is the Cooperative Housing Study Tour that is regularly conducted to introduce the principles and practices of self-help housing to all interested sectors.
ALTERPLAN conducts research, including policy research, related to its areas of concern. Through its research, ALTERPLAN has examined issues related to the following: gender and the built environment, medium-rise buildings as housing solutions, land registration, housing finance, solid waste management and cooperative housing development in the Philippines. The organization maintains a library of resource materials that can be accessed by interested individuals or groups.
ALTERPLAN is sometimes called on to provide event management for foreign partners for conferences and trainings related to housing, urban development and planning.
